Romaine Gustave Solbert (September 7, – June 9, )[2] was an American artist, photographer, and author, known primarily as an illustrator of books, including The Pushcart War and more than a dozen other titles written by her partner Jean Merrill.
Early life and education
Solbert was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Rochester, New York. Her father was Oscar Nathaniel Solbert, a Swedish immigrant who became a general in the United States Army, serving in both World War I and World War II.
